Lightning Dust Set for String Quartet Makeover

Cris Derksen has been a fixture in the Vancouver, BC music community for quite some time. Having written and performed string arrangements with acts like Lightning Dust, Ladyhawk, Kinnie Starr, Rae Spoon and even Kanye West, the cellist has built a name for her unique compositions and forward-thinking approach. Now, her abilities will be taken to new heights with a special night of music at the East Vancouver Cultural Centre.

Taking place later this month, the unique performance sees Derksen join a string quartet to perform with Vancouver acts Lightning Dust and Chris Smith and the Beckon Call. Both groups' work will be reinterpreted with new arrangements created by Derksen and fellow Vancouver composer Lucas Schuller.

Speaking with CBC Radio 3, Derksen explained how she prepared for the event. "I took all the parts [of the songs] and put them in [new arrangements with] the tops parts on the violin and the lower parts on the cello. It got a little bit more complicated, just adding my own melodies into their melodies and making sure they don't clash."

This one-time event will take place at the East Vancouver Cultural Centre on April 25 at 8 p.m.. The seats are limited to 130, so it would be wise to purchase your tickets here.
