Having worked together while his art rock outfit Home was based in Florida, current New Yorker Eric Morrison has hooked up again with Meringue members Trey Conner and Chris Sturgeon for a new collaboration called Leels. Although very much its own beast, Leels follows the modus operandi of Home, creating some incredibly heady progressive pop songs. The various tracks are a collection of brilliant hooks, inventive arrangements, intense jams, gentle melodies and chugging rock. Once you get beyond the almost always strained vocals and general rough edges, a beautiful and powerful album emerges. Fans of Home, as well as art rock enthusiasts without an aversion to lo-fi sounds, should definitely track this down.
