Lee Ranaldo

'Between the Times and the Tides' (album stream)

BY Alex HudsonPublished Mar 12, 2012

With Sonic Youth in limbo, thanks to the breakup of Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, band co-founder Lee Ranaldo is busying himself by releasing a new solo LP. Between the Times a the Tides will arrive on March 20 via Matador Records, but you can listen to it now on Exclaim.ca.

For this collection, Ranaldo recruited some talented friends, including fellow Sonic Youth member Steve Shelley, past Sonic Youth cohorts Bob Bert and Jim O'Rourke, Wilco's Nels Cline, bassist Irwin Menkin and jazz explorers Alan Licht and John Medesk.

While some of Ranaldo's past solo efforts have ventured into avant noise, a press release notes that this album "recalls some of our favourite rock'n'roll projects" and "sounds like a fantastic new band that was apparently being assembled right under our noses."

Stream the album below. Only time will tell what the fate of Sonic Youth will be, but if Ranaldo and his collaborators can keep on cooking up rock records, that will make the uncertainly a little easier to bear.

UPDATE: This stream is no longer available.
