The Click Hear crew will be taking a break for the next two weeks, but you shouldn't let that stop you from swinging by this spot to (re)discover some of our favourite tracks from the past year. There's no real rhyme or reason behind these picks; they're just the songs that have helped to soundtrack the last 12 months for us. Enjoy and have a happy holidays.
Don't exactly call it a comeback for Lee Fields; this comeback's been going on for over a decade. Fields was active in the 1970s, and predictably his lone LP from this era is a coveted collector's item. He re-emerged as one of the first vocalists on the Desco, and later Dap-Tone, labels along with a certain Sharon Jones (with whom he has recorded). In 2004, one of the initial releases on the newly formed Truth and Soul Records launched was Fields' "Do You Love Me (Like You Say You Do)."
Truth and Soul issues My World, Fields' first album for the label, on June 2. If you are a true funk-o-phile, you might have "Love Comes And Goes" (no relation to the Ed OG and the Bulldogs hip-hop classic, or the a track by the fictional band Stillwater from Almost Famous) on the b-side of a seven-inch from a couple of years ago. It's included on the new disc and the label has made it available gratis. Call it neo-soul, but there's more than enough grit and finesse to make for repeated listening. Plus it bears a certain resemblance to one of Chicago soul's all-time classics, the proto-dub "Sly Slick and Wicked" by the Lost Generation.
Back in the day, they called it a "rewrite." Get your slow jam on and hear for yourself:
Lee Fields & The Expressions - "Love Comes And Goes"
The Lost Generation - "Sly Slick And Wicked"
