Lawrence

Until Then, Goodbye

BY Andrea AyottePublished Sep 14, 2009

German composer and Dial label owner Peter M. Kersten returns with his fourth release, Until Then, Goodbye, under his most prominent alias, Lawrence. His other monikers include Sten, Lloyd and work with collaborative ambient guitar quartet Bordeaux. Through these different aliases, Kersten demonstrates his remarkable talent at mastering a diverse set of genres. His extraordinary skill at producing different styles comes through on Until Then, Goodbye, making it his most experimental Lawrence release to date. The album opens with recorded club sounds layered over a slow ambient snippet of "Friday's Child." "Jill" is classically Lawrence ― minimal deep house with subtle builds and soft, gliding synths. "The Dream" is a downtempo acoustic jam with slow-building chimes and spiritual ambience. Until Then, Goodbye exhibits Kersten's ability to tightly weave a kaleidoscope of production styles together into one brilliantly fluid album full of subtle, heartfelt ambience, meditative acoustic melodies and deep, grooving minimal techno.
