Experimental music artist Laurie Anderson recently explored grief in her Heart of a Dog documentary, as well as provided music for the film. Now that the movie has been making the rounds on the festival circuit and is ready for a wider release, a soundtrack collecting her score and a Lou Reed rarity will be issued through the Nonesuch imprint.
The release is due October 23. It will feature 26 pieces of music from Anderson, some of it instrumental and some featuring vocals. Certain portions of the score have been unveiled before, with "The Lake" and "Flow," for instance, having appeared on Anderson's 2010 effort Homeland. Additionally, "Beautiful Pea Green Boat" was taken from 1994's Bright Red, "Rhumba Club" comes from 2001's Life on a String and excerpts from a 2011 collaboration with Kronos Quartet are also scattered through the soundtrack. You can get an idea of what to expect via a movie trailer down below.
In addition to her music, Anderson has included a song performed by her late husband, Lou Reed. The track is called "Turning Time Around."
Written, directed and starring Anderson, Heart of a Dog examines the deaths of Reed, her mother, and her dog, and weighs in on themes of memory, Buddhism, the connection between love and death, and more. The film had previously been shown as part of this year's TIFF, and will get a wider release via Abramorama/HBO Documentary Films on October 21.
