Laurie Anderson

Life on a String

BY I. KhiderPublished Nov 1, 2001

A rich, lush album enriched by full string arrangements and orchestral accompaniment and, of course, Laurie Anderson's sweet voice and violin playing. Utilising a combination of song and storytelling spoken-word styles, the listener is invited into Laurie Anderson's personal confidence, as she relates her thoughts in an artfully arranged way. Even the instrumental track "Here With You" expresses sentimental feelings, perhaps even romantic. Meticulously arranged and tightly constructed to accentuate Anderson's words, Life On A String is an example of first-rate production. "Washington Street" is a perfect mixture of narrative and song backed by cinematic instrumentals as Anderson poetically depicts snapshots of nocturnal life in New York. This CD comes in a gorgeous box case with photos depicting artful chalkboard illustrations.
