Last Winter

Under The Silver of Machines

BY Dave SynyardPublished Jul 18, 2007

Musically, Under The Silver of Machines is an alternative/power pop album to a perfect tee. Lyrically, it’s Cameron Mizell’s heart gushing out to his one true soul mate, or an appeal to any teenager that thinks they’re in love every time they meet someone new. This whole emo-inspired rock music has been done, and done well, by the Ataris and Saves the Day years ago but the beat goes on. "The Violent Things” introduces Last Winter’s music, which is littered with clean harmonies and vocals, pop rhythms and frequent digital drumming. The same style continues from track to track, with "Kiss So Hard” and "Girl Next Door” singing about the one that got away or never was, which makes it impossible to believe that these lovelorn rockers were featured on MTV’s My Super Sweet Sixteen and Laguna Beach. Not exactly something to brag about. This album lacks any kind of real thinking, with each track repeating itself both lyrically and musically.
