Sludgy Savannah band Kylesa started their very own label called Retro Futurist a couple of years back, but they will be sticking with Season of Mist for their next full-length. Exhausting Fire will be out on October 2.
The album was tracked at the Jam Room in Columbia, SC, with the band's own singer-guitarist Phillip Cope handing production. A press release explains that songs focus on the theme of "loss."
Exhausting Fire apparently represents a sonic shift from Kylesa's prior album, 2013's Ultraviolet. Singer-guitarist Laura Pleasants said in a press release, "I think with Ultraviolet we got too far into doing what we wanted and forgot that Kylesa is, at heart, a heavy band. That's one thing I had to keep in mind because I am interested in different kinds of music and writing differently. With this one, I wanted to write heavy riffs, the kind I hadn't written in a while, and see where that took us."
For a taste of the album, hear the melodic, hazily crushing "Lost and Confused" at the bottom of this page. If you're suitably impressed, Exhausting Fire is available to pre-order in various formats from Season of Mist's online store.
