Versus

BY James KeastPublished Feb 1, 2002

An import-only remix treatment fleshes out the meaty beaty pop sensibilities of these sensitive Norwegian crooners. It doesn't stray far from the slow-fi whispers of their fabulous Quiet Is the New Loud album, but the addition of sharp horns (on Evil Tordivel's Upbeat Remake of "Leaning Against the Wall") or the electro-fusion of Four Tet is a fresh perspective on old friends. Most remixers here play on the elements already present, cranking up the strings, looping the vocals, or echoing the drums to overturn, but not completely overhaul, the duo's original sound. And having opened the door, it's probably only a matter of time before more dance floor-oriented producers take Versus into much more hardcore territory.
