Berlin-based producer Kez YM makes solid, club-ready house music with the regularity and consistency of a tradesman. He's put out EPs on almost a dozen underground labels since 2008, and while his releases are anything but fodder, one gets the sense on Solidity that he's settled into a formula.
Kez YM returns to City Fly Records for this new four-tracker and stays in familiar territory for the most part, laying down imposing 4/4 drum beats with open hi-hats and then weaving a synthesized bass groove with organ and piano chords, vocal samples, crowd noises and crisp percussion. Vocals that repeatedly say "come on" and "alright" on the last track "Spiral Traffic" reaffirm one's sense that while Kez YM has a great command of his gear and high production standards, he isn't immune to house clichés.
For discerning DJs looking to move a floor with tracks that don't compromise on depth and texture, or for insatiable house-heads looking for their next hit, this record will certainly do the trick. For everyone else, it can probably be ignored.
