The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has unveiled its 2023 nominees, with Kate Bush, Rage Against the Machine, the White Stripes, Iron Maiden and Missy Elliott among this year's 14-act nomination pool.

Sheryl Crow, Soundgarden, A Tribe Called Quest, Willie Nelson, George Michael, Cyndi Lauper, the Spinners and Warren Zevon have also been nominated for induction. First-time nominees Joy Division and New Order join the ranks as a package deal.

"This remarkable list of nominees reflects the diverse artists and music that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honours and celebrates," Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation chairman John Sykes said in a statement. "These artists have created their own sounds that have impacted generations and influenced countless others that have followed in their footsteps."

Lauper added, "It's such an honour and thrill to be recognized by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a nominee. Seeing my name on this year's ballot with so many talents that I admire means so much to me. It has been a lifetime privilege to reach so many different kinds of fans with a message of following your own path (and having fun along the way, too)."

"This is an incredible honour," Elliott offered. "I'm so humbled and grateful to be counted amongst all the incredible honorees. I've spent my career making the kind of music I love and it means so much to know that I have touched others as well. But to hear that I am the first female hip hop artist to EVER be nominated into the Rock & Rock Hall of Fame?!? Wow!! This one hits extra different as I hope it opens doors for other female emcees to be recognized!"

The class of 2023 will be announced in May, with the induction ceremony to follow this fall. Fans can vote for their favourite nominees from now through April 28 to help them make the public's top-five ballot, which will be counted among those of the Rock Hall's international voting body comprising over 1,000 historians, artists and members of the music industry.

Nomination eligibility requires an artist to have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years before the nominal year, while inductees are determined based on influence, length and depth of career, level of innovation and so on.

In 2022, Dolly Parton, Eminem, Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo, Duran Duran, Eurythmics, Lionel Richie and Carly Simon were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
