Kate Nash's Representation of "the Working Class Musician" Criticized by Indie Band over BRIT School Education

"If you want to talk about how 'broken' the music industry is, should we address that 8/10 best artist nominees at the Brit Awards last year went to YOUR SCHOOL"

Kate Nash has been drawing attention to the current dire state of the music industry, launching an OnlyFans account with a campaign she's calling "Butts 4 Tour Buses" to help cover the costs of her current UK tour. She even took to the London Live Nation and Spotify offices with a fire truck earlier this week to protest.

While most other musicians have been very supportive of the British singer-songwriter exposes how unsustainable the streaming economy is — as well as trying to tour in a mega-inflated post-2020 landscape — one band has taken issue with Nash posturing herself as "the spokesperson for the 'working class musician,'" given the fact that she attended the prestigious BRIT School.

The British performing and creative arts school in Selhurst, Croydon, has indeed produced many famous alumni, including Adele, Amy Winehouse, FKA twigs, Imogen Heap and Leona Lewis. Notably, it is also the only free performing arts school in the UK.

The ironically-named band Lottery Winners who hail from Leigh, UK, criticized Nash's BRIT School roots on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter today, writing, "I don't mind if you went to private school and Brit School, I'm happy for you. But when did you become the spokesperson for the 'working class musician.' No thanks mate."

In another since-deleted post, they continued [via NME], "If you want to talk about how 'broken' the music industry is, should we address that 8/10 best artist nominees at the Brit Awards last year went to YOUR SCHOOL."

It's hard to tell if Lottery Winners are referring to this year's awards — where, of the 10 acts nominated for Artist of the Year, two (Raye and Olivia Dean) went to the BRIT School — or the 2023 edition, where none of the five nominees (Harry Styles, Central Cee, Fred again.., George Ezra and Stormzy) were BRIT School attendees. Clearly some wires have been crossed here, and that's probably why they deleted the tweets.

Still, you can check out screenshots below. It kind of seems like Nash is just drawing attention to an issue that all indie musicians are facing to varying degrees, which should hypothetically be good for the band called Lottery Winners, but what do I know?
