Julian Casablancas has joined the ranks of artists who've sold their music's publishing rights in recent years, selling a stake in the Stroke's catalogue to Primary Wave for an undisclosed sum.
As Rolling Stone reports, the sale includes a portion of both publishing rights and masters rights, though it hasn't been revealed whether Casablancas retained a portion of his stake, nor how much the deal actually cost. The sale only includes Casablancas' rights for music he made with the Strokes, and not any of his other projects.
Casablancas joins Justin Timberlake, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Nicks and many more in recent years, who've taken large payouts for the publishing rights to their music.
"Primary Wave is thrilled to partner with Julian Casablancas for his works in the Strokes," David Weitzman, a partner at Primary Wave, told Rolling Stone in a statement. "Julian's extraordinary talents as a songwriter, singer, and leader infuse the magic that is The Strokes. The Strokes are one of the most important bands of this century and are beloved by a multi-generational audience who have made them a global festival headliner."
The Strokes' last album was 2020's Rick Rubin-produced The New Abnormal.
