In honour of the 50th anniversary of Blue, Joni Mitchell has treated her Christmastime classic "River" to its first-ever official music video.
Animated by Skazka Studios and directed by Matvey Rezanov, the watercolour black-and-white clip pays tribute to the singer's painting hobby, and sees a Mitchell stand-in skating on — you guessed it — and frozen river, as colour slowly reveals itself in the surrounding landscape.
"'River' expresses regret at the end of a relationship … but it's also about being lonely at Christmas time … A Christmas song for people who are lonely at Christmas! We need a song like that," said Mitchell of the track.
Earlier this year, the artist celebrated her revered fourth album's landmark anniversary with the release of digital EP Blue 50 (Demos & Outtakes), which included early demos of "A Case of You" and "California," an alternate version of "River" with French horns, an early take of rarity "Urge for Going" with strings, and a studio recording of "Hunter."
