John Paul Jones continues to play in myriad bands despite the relative inactivity of Led Zeppelin and Them Crooked Vultures, and he's now revealed his latest project will debut in Japan later this year.
Jones has formed a new duo with Finnish cellist Anssi Karttunen dubbed Sons of Chipotle. The two also perform together in trio Tres Coyotes with Magnus Lindberg.
Said to "cover an uncommonly vast area of the musical map," Jones and Karttunen will debut the project at Tokyo's Pitt Inn on September 3 and 5. An event listing for the performance reads as follows:
It is incredibly rare to find two of the finest musicians in the world performing in such an intimate setting for what will be a series of remarkable concerts. Both musicians are known to be curious minds, always ready to learn and to discover. When they improvise, borders disappear, they are free to migrate beyond prejudices, across continents. In a world where walls are being built and people are told where they cannot go, Sons of Chipotle want music to be a place of openness.
The event notes that both days will feature two performances each, with Jones handling piano and electronics while Karttunen will play cello and electronics. Each show will also feature guest appearances from Jim O'Rourke and Otomo Yoshihide.
