In what's surely one of the more personally revealing album announcements we've seen in a long while, Vancouver singer-songwriter Jasper Sloan Yip has unveiled his sophomore full-length, Foxtrot. It's due out on July 16.
So what's so confessional about this announcement? Well, in a statement, the singer explained that the songs were inspired by his breakup with the violinist in his own band.
"More than anything it's an account of the end of my relationship with Stephanie [Chatman], our violinist," Yip explained. "This entire record takes place within the walls of our apartment, but it's bigger than that. I really tried to find the big picture from all of the small details of our life together. It also dives into my relationship with music. I tried to parallel the two relationships because they both demonstrated to me how difficult it is to love someone, or something."
The album is reportedly a departure from his 2010 album Every Day and All at Once, as it features stylistically diverse tunes brimming with "pensive introspection and expansive instrumentation."
The album cut "Show Your Teeth" recently won Shore 104.3 FM's Best of B.C. contest for May 2013, which netted the artist a $10,000 prize. Hear the song at the bottom of this page.
