Not one to let his hoop dreams die, J. Cole is taking his pro basketball ambitions to Canada, joining the Scarbrough Shooting Stars of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL).
The Scarborough Shooting Stars announced yesterday (May 19) that Cole — a 37-year-old, 6-3 guard from Fayetteville, NC, who also happens to be one of the most popular recording artists working today — had signed with the team for its inaugural CEBL season.
Cole made his professional debut last year in the Basketball Africa League with the Rwanda-based Patriots Basketball Club, averaging 1.7 points and 1.7 rebounds in a little over 15 minutes per game over three games with the team. Days before hitting the court, he had delivered sixth studio album The Off-Season.
Cole's summer tour schedule — which includes headlining slots at Bonnaroo and Governors Ball — may have an impact on his availability game-to-game. For instance, on the weekend he's due to headline Lollapalooza 2022, the Shooting Stars play two games against the Fraser Valley Bandits and Newfoundland Growlers to close out their regular season campaign.
Founded in 2017, the CEBL is Canada's pre-eminent professional basketball league. The 10-team league begins its 2022 season on May 25.
