The ill.Methodology

BY Sarah FergusonPublished Oct 24, 2011

Recently moved from Toronto to California, ill.Gates is closer than ever to his record label, MUTI, and the Western bass massive. Producer and remixer of dirty Canadian festival music, ill.Gates has been called a world-travelling dubstep innovator due to his Ill Methodology beat production workshops carried on throughout Canada and internationally. Ill.Gates' second LP, The ill.Methodology, carries solid organizational strength and power of an eclectic collection of collaborations with bass music producers. The record coherently joins audio zones of glitch, breaks and dubstep with MCs on some tracks, including Masia One and Junia-T. A sick East/West side collaboration by Mat the Alien and ill.Gates ("Otoro") brings the bass and the breaks with smooth cultural commentary by Dash. There's a peacemaking aspect between technological and traditional when The ill.Methodology takes a downtempo turn towards the end of the record. "My Special Place," with Freedom Danish, sounds like music to be played at a revolutionary event. "Schnee," a collaboration with D. Schaerf, combines sounds of temple bells and violins with police sirens and glitch.
