Hunting

'Hunting' (album stream)

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Feb 19, 2014

As previously reported, the songs off Vancouver outfit Hunting's self-titled debut started off in a synthy solo direction before leader Bradley Ferguson roped in a folksy team of collaborators. The gentle, roots-filtered final results officially hits retailers February 25 through Nevado Records, but Hunting and Exclaim! are bringing you a full album stream a week ahead of time.

While the project's origins had Ferguson crafting keyboard lines in Paris and Berlin, getting back to Vancouver had him signing up violinist Jesse Zubot (Fond of Tigers, Zubot and Dawson), Paul Rigby (Neko Case, A.C. Newman), drummer John Raham (the Be Good Tanyas, Kelly Joe Phelps), and glockenspiel player Jessica Yliruusi to deliver graceful and almost whispered back-porch sermons like "Everything Will Be Okay," spacious and echo-blown slow jams for "Lonely Happy," and the elegiac strings-and-space sounds of "Stay."

"I tried out a couple of the tunes with a full band, instead of just programming beats in my bedroom," Ferguson had previously explained in a statement. "It totally took my brain to a different level. Everybody became such a huge part of the sound."

The self-described "sad, yet hopeful" 10-song set also features contributions from Mother Mother's Ryan Guldemond, Dustin Bentall, bassist Darren Parris and banjo/pedal steel player John Ellis.
