Since self-releasing Record in a Bag more than four years ago, Hollerado's outlandish live schedule has included trips through China and South America, a seven-city "Residency Tour" and the comical "Meet the Mayor Tour." With hundreds of shows under their belts, it's no wonder these road warriors have such impeccable chemistry on their sophomore LP. Their knack for power-pop sing-alongs remains undiminished, but what sets White Paint apart from their debut is the intricacy of the arrangements. "Don't Think" is a momentum-building juggernaut that undergoes several rhythmic shifts without ever losing sight of its hook, while the epic "Fresno Chunk (Digging with You)" moves from waltz time Dylan-isms to a slinky dance groove and back. This genre-pilfering eclecticism never feels forced or unnatural, since all of melodies are memorable and frontman Menno Versteeg's big-picture lyrics lend an air of sophistication to the proceedings. White Paint is as intelligent as it is immediate.
