Roberto Carlos Lange has detailed his eighth LP as Helado Negro. The artist will share Phasor on February 9 via 4AD.
The nine-track Phasor follows Lange's 2021 album Far In, and contrasting with that LP's insular nature, the artist's latest is described as a "returning-to-life" record.
A release notes how Lange was particularly inspired by the landscapes of Asheville, NC, when making Phasor, in addition to a visit to the University of Illinois to see Salvatore Martirano's SAL-MAR Construction — an electronic instrument believed to be the first real-time, interactive "composing machine."
"It gave me special insight into what stimulates me," Lange explains of the synthesizer in a statement. "This pursuit of constant curiosity in process and outcome. The songs are the fruit, but I love what's under the dirt. The unseen magical process. I don't want everybody to see it because not everyone cares to see it. Some of us just want the fruit. I do. But I want to grow the fruit, too."
Opening track "LFO" arrives today alongside the album news, and you can hear it below alongside a video directed by Lange.
A song about ambient stress and endless scrolling, the title of the Spanish language piece stands for "Lupe Finds Oliveros," naming inspirations in minimalist composer Pauline Oliveros and Lupe Lopez, a Mexican American woman who made amplifiers for Fender Guitar in the 1950s that have since become treasured pieces of gear.
Lange explains of Lupe Lopez, "Lupe's amps are sought after, her care and touch apparently harnessed a special sound from this design. I fell in love with this story and this legacy and the mythology surrounding it. How craft touches us so deeply in the smallest ways. Deep care for the littlest things makes all the difference."
