Gucci Mane x Diplo

Diplo Presents: Free Gucci (Best of the Cold War Mixtapes)

BY Anupa MistryPublished Jan 12, 2010

Despite being behind bars, tricolour fanatic Gucci Mane is using his 2009 momentum to go beyond the trap with a remix album created by party producer Diplo. Free Gucci features 15 tracks taken from the rapper's recent Cold War Mixtapes series, re-supplied with Mad Decent's rote electro, B-more and dub-step influences. It's not solely a Diplo endeavour ― myriad DJs and producers show up, from Flying Lotus to Memory Tapes to Mad Decent resident Benzi. More wonderful than weird, the dance-y beats work ridiculously well with Gucci's playfully forceful flow (and, no, unfortunately "Wonderful" doesn't appear). Standouts include the surprisingly bucolic "Danger's Not a Stranger," the bright "Excuse Me" and the ATB-sampling "Break Yourself." And despite the obvious appeal to a non-rap audience, it's hard not to grin when Daniel Bedingfield's '00s banger "Gotta Get Through This" sets off "I'm The Shit."
