Brooklyn, NY's Goes Cube certainly take influences from metal (frantic double-kick drums abound) and punk rock (snotty, yelled vocals). However, Another Day Has Passed, their debut LP, reflects an interest in sharper aggressive acts, with vocals more in tune with noise rock bellowers like Unsane's Chris Spencer. This makes for an interesting combination with the more metalcore-tuned drums, although one wishes the clean, tight production was dirtied up a bit. The strong studio sound does make for occasional benefits, however. "Saab Sonnet" even makes use of curiously melodic, genuinely alternative rock choruses that manage to be both hooky and heavy. This track makes for a great one-two punch early in the album, with "I Hold Grudges" almost sounding like the Devin Townsend Band playing Hot Snakes. The crunchy shredding will please those who enjoyed Kylesa's Static Tension, released earlier this year, infused with the same type of genuine punk energy that transcends occasionally weak songwriting. Goes Cube certainly hold promise for the future, and hopefully their talent will grow exponentially.
