Gini Dodds represents less a dying breed than an endangered species: a soulful female singer-songwriter fronting a band of gun-for-hire studio guys, churning out mid-tempo rockers about guys that don't treat you right. She strikes a Chrissie Hynde in a liner photo but actually harkens back to a musical past that may have never existed, flying the flag for a mishmash of bar-band influences from the past 25 years. A few attempts at modernising her sound - distorted vocals on one track, a breakbeat loop on another - fall well short and reveal the lack of depth present everywhere on Mellowdrama.
