Galactic

From the Corner to the Block

BY Vish KhannaPublished Aug 16, 2007

New Orleans collective Galactic drop a bright concept record bolstered by some of the strongest MCs in hip-hop. The five-piece band create jolts of electrified funk with hard, propelling beats tailor-made for hip-hop. Inspired by their hometown’s historic intersections, Galactic invited lyricists to rhyme about "corners.” The theme is loosely realised but the songs are arranged with such glee and gusto that it’s easy to get swept up by From the Corner to the Block. After uncharacteristically pandering pop from Lyrics Born with "What You Need,” the record takes off with Mr. Lif’s "...And I’m Out” and the dizzying flow of Gift of Gab on "The Corner.” Chali 2na goes old school for "Think Back,” while Boots Riley is as bold on "Hustle Up” as Ladybug Mecca is captivating on "Sqaurebiz.” Not to be outdone, Galactic enter their comfort zone, tearing shit up on jazzy instrumentals "Bounce Baby” and "Tough Love.” On their first hip-hop experiment, Galactic pull off an amazing feat.
