Move over, Skrillex: a new collaborative album between Brian Eno and Fred again.. is set to arrive this Friday via Four Tet's record label.
Today on Twitter, Four Tet shared that the duo's Secret Life would see release May 5 via his own Text Records, with vinyl and CD versions to follow.
Calling it "the most beautiful album of 2023," Four Tet also shared that an internet radio station, secretlife.fm, "has been broadcasting every day for a while at 10pm UK time." You can see the LP's cover artwork above.
Eno has spoken previously about his time mentoring Fred again.., sharing with Apple Music last October, "When I first worked with Fred I could see he was brilliant. It took me quite a while to think, 'Oh my gosh, this is really a new idea about how you can make music.' So I learnt a lot from him."
Expanding on his observation, Eno continued, "What I noticed with Fred is that he would start something, and he wouldn't turn it into a loop that's going to run through the whole track. He'd just have it running for a tiny little bit and then he'd put something else there! [His pieces] are very non-linear; he doesn't clean everything off, so in every piece of recording, there's a sort of context that comes with it as well. The sound has a history built into it."
The son of members of the British peerage, and descendant of English aristocrats, Fred again.. first met Eno at age 16 upon being invited by a family friend to join an a capella group rehearsal hosted by the ambient music legend. A profile in The Guardian notes that if the young artist wasn't making tea or tidying up song sheets for the group, he was talking synths and bringing song sketches to Eno.
After mentoring Fred again.. for two years, Eno enlisted him to co-produce his pair of albums with Underworld's Karl Hyde, 2014's Someday World and High Life.
Secret Life follows a 2022 that saw Eno and Fred again.. both release albums. The two respectively shared ForeverAndEverNoMore and Actual Life 3 (January 1 - September 9 2022) last year.
With Skrillex, Four Tet and Fred again.. recently performed during the second weekend of Coachella 2023 in place of Frank Ocean. The trio of producers — who were all over Skrillex's Quest for Fire and Don't Get Too Close albums earlier this year — also played Madison Square Garden as a trio, and delivered single "Baby Again.."
