Francesco Tristano

Idiosynkrasia

BY Sarah FergusonPublished Jan 18, 2011

The album title is a play on the word idiosyncrasy, meaning a peculiar or different characteristic. This is fitting, as Idiosynkrasia is a highly original record. Francesco Tristano is a celebrated classical pianist who has performed with the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra and as a soloist throughout the world. For this album, the artist joined forces with techno pioneer Carl Craig at Planet E Studios in Detroit to "bring the piano into the 21st century." The vision was always about making music to exist in the arbitrary meeting place between the acoustic and electronic, and that communication here is boundary-free. These songs ("Last Days" and "Nach Wasser noche Erde") leave no confusion to Francesco's high-level classical training as a pianist. As Idiosynkrasia progresses, the techno aspects begin to appear more prominently, but never overbearingly. Rather, there is skilled electronic reworkings of original piano melodies by Francesco, ranging from slight to striking. The two artists successfully bridge the worlds of classical, experimental, jazz, and techno.
