Foul Mouth Jerk

Streetlight Music

BY Omar MouallemPublished Jul 23, 2008

For whatever rap fans that grew up on ’80s hip-hop left, veteran Foul Mouth Jerk, of the instrumental rap group GFE, delivers a dose of traditional old school. Streetlight Music, his fourth solo album, is heavily highlighted with thick bass, jazz samples and lots of scratches. Pioneer Grandmaster Caz vouches for his style on "Day One,” while Legend Masta Ace matches him on "Small Town USA,” where the two give a nod to the small venues and new crowds they meet year round. However, there are dull moments like "Culture of Life (Jesus Doesn’t Give a Shit),” where Foul Mouth tries to make social commentary but has no original ideas. Regardless of its occasional lulls, it’s a sweet throwback.
