Long-running metalcore act Underoath have gone through many lineups (and sounds) over the years. In their earliest incarnation, they were almost an entirely different band that flirted with death metal tendencies. Sadly, Corey Steger — Underoath's guitarist from that era — has died following a car crash.

The news was first reported on Instagram by Dallas Taylor, who was the original Underoath vocalist and founder. Taylor himself was in a 2016 ATV accident where he suffered a serious brain injury and lost his eye.

In Taylor's post, he recalls Steger standing by his side:

I don't know how to type this. I'm without words. Yesterday 3/17/2021 at around 6:00 p.m. Corey Steger one of the original founding members of Underoath was rear ended in a car wreck, and went home to be with the Lord. Him, and his family have had such an impact during my [own] accident, and recovery. I still remember him washing my hair in ICU just wanting to love on me, and be there for me. He is one of the kindest souls I've ever known. I really cannot wrap my head around this, and I don't even know what to type. I love you Corey you are one of the greatest closest friends I've ever known. My heart is completely broken for his wife, kids, and his family if you can please keep them in your prayers.

Steger played on Underoath's first two albums, Act of Depression and Cries of the Past. More recently, he contributed guitar solos and vocals to the steampunk-themed power metal band Heirs of Isildur. He's survived by his wife Kim and his young children Vienne and August.

Watch performance footage from him below alongside a YouTube video he uploaded where he absolutely shreds on a guitar below.
