Floating Points — a.k.a. British producer Sam Shepherd — has delivered his third single of the year, "Problems," via Ninja Tune.
The track comes attached to a video directed and produced by Hamill Industries, wherein a technique called vector rescanning is used, allowing dancers Hannah Ekholm and Jal Joshua to transform their movements into sound, tangling and morphing with the music's different sonic elements, and making video into sound into a vector image, all in real-time.
Hamill shared of the clip in a statement:
"Problems" is meant to agitate every single room that its ecstatic sound waves reach. We wanted to celebrate it with movement and dance and reshape it through sound, by using techniques that allow the signification of images. We have used lasers that spin and move with the music, making visible their sinuous shapes. It was important that this video shaped the electrical feeling you get when being on a dancefloor, the urge of dancing when sound waves reach your ears.
Shepherd's latest follows the release of "Grammar" and "Vocoder" from earlier this year. The producer has yet to announce a follow-up to Promises — one of Exclaim!'s Best Albums of 2021.
