The Flaming Lips already shared some unique oddities on Record Store Day (April 20) and Black Friday (November 29), and now they've unearthed even more material for a special release on Christmas Eve.
Although December 24 isn't typically celebrated by Record Store Day, the Flaming Lips will be following the RSD model of distributing limited numbers of the records to indie music stores. The band will be unveiling two archival reissues: The Flaming Lips 1st EP (pictured above left) and The Flaming Lips 2nd Cassette Demo (pictured above right).
The functionally titled 1st EP was the band's first-ever release; it came out as a self-titled EP in 1984 and features frontman Wayne Coyne's brother Mark on lead vocals. This new pressing will consist of 2,000 green vinyl copies, all signed by Wayne.
As for 2nd Cassette Demo, this actually dates back to before the debut EP. It was recorded on September 14, 1983, but it was never released and rarely heard. This will be pressed on 7-inch blue vinyl and limited to 2,000 copies, again signed by Wayne. This demo previously came with the band's "Fuck You Frog" audio recorders.
Before Christmas Eve, Coyne will be embarking on a "Record Store Tour," where he will be selling those previously promised chocolate human skulls. The 1st EP will be housed inside the chocolate skulls. The 2nd Cassette Demo will also be for sale, but Coyne won't be hitting any Canadian cities, so we'll just have to hope that our local stores will carry the titles or snag a copy online (likely at some grossly inflated price).
It's not clear which stores will be selling the collections, and Record Store Day's website simply says that it will be available at "indie record stores."
