Swedish musician Lars-Göran "L-G" Petrov — best known as the frontman of Entombed, Entombed A.D. and Firespawn — has died following a battle with bile duct cancer. He was 49 years old.
Entombed A.D. confirmed his death earlier today in a Facebook post:
Our brother, leader, vocalist, our Chief Rebel Angel went on another ride last night. It's with the deepest sadness that we have to announce that Lars-Göran Petrov has left us. He was (is!!!) an incredible friend, and a person that has touched so many people. He has changed so many lives with his voice, his music, his character and his unique personality. LG's smile is something that we will carry forever in our hearts. When asked in an interview what he would like to have written on his grave and what about his legacy, he said: "I will never die, it will never die". And you didn't. You will live forever in our hearts.
Formed by Nicke Andersson, guitarist Alex Hellid and bassist Leif Cuzner in 1987, Entombed recruited Petrov as the band's lead vocalist in 1988. Save for a period of time in the early '90s, Petrov remained as the group's lead vocalist until 2014, when he and other bandmates formed Entombed A.D. The group would go on to record three albums, the latest of which, Bowels of Earth, was released in 2019.
Very active in the Scandinavian metal scene, Petrov also contributed vocals to the death metal band Comecon's debut album Megatrends in Brutality, played drums in Morbid and appeared on several Nihilist recordings, as well as Allegiance's 1989 album Sick World. Throughout his decades-long career, Petrov also contributed guest vocals to Amon Amarth, Rotten Sound and more.
Amon Amarth vocalist Johan Hegg paid tribute to the late artist on Twitter: "The word legend is [too] small to describe LG and what he meant for me as a friend and inspiration. Not only was he one of the best and original voices in metal, but the most kind, humble, funny and genuine person one could ever hope to meet. I will miss you my friend! R.I.P."
In August 2020, the artist launched a GoFundMe to help cover the costs of his medical expenses. The campaign raised 666,666 SEK (just under $100,000 CAD), with donations arriving up until and following news of his death.
