Efdemin

Chicago

BY Andrea AyottePublished Jun 7, 2010

After the success of his first self-titled debut back in 2007, Berlin-based producer/DJ Efdemin (aka Phillip Sollmann) emerges with his long-awaited second release, Chicago, on Dial. This multifaceted producer graduated from the Institute for Computer Music in Vienna, where he worked on developing sound installations, collected field recordings and helped his professor create a contemporary opera. He also sang in a band and invited label-mate and old childhood friend Pantha du Prince to join him when he needed a bassist. Efdemin's first taste of electronic music was house and no matter how far he ventures, he always returns. On Chicago, this becomes apparent with his organic executions combining house, techno and jazz. Some standout tracks are "Shoeshine," a bass-driven house track that gradually constructs a fluid, timeless groove. "There Will Be Singing" is a celebratory, deep, bouncy house number and "Wonderland (The Race For Space)" is a subtle, slow-evolving, jazz-infused percussion track that submerges you deep within its layers. Influenced by Chicago's musical history, Efdemin delivers deeply evolving experimental house numbers and demonstrates his ability to combine old influential moments in time with new contemporary sounds.
