Being Elastic

Montreal's Each Other first impressed with their 2011 tape, Taking Trips, a criminally unnoticed debut of wiry, leftfield pop. Another digital EP, Heavily Spaced, further suggested that Each Other's imminent full-length would be something special. After signing with Lefse, which put both How To Dress Well and Neon Indian on the map, the trio don't disappoint with Being Elastic, channelling all of that unbridled, buoyant energy into a dozen songs.

Where this band succeeds most is in catching the listener off-guard with their split-second, fidgety tangents that can arrive at any time. It's their bread and butter, their trademark, and while you come to expect it, the song structures on Being Elastic are all divergent without feeling cumbersome. With all three members harmonizing for the majority of the album, they also avoid the awkward transition between vocalists, which could easily have upset their wonderfully wired disposition.

Though the album was capably self-recorded at home, it'd be great to hear what an outside producer could get from this band come the next album, but for now, Each Other have lived up to their potential with Being Elastic. Let's hope this time they get noticed.
