Downbelows

Queen and Bathurst

BY Stuart GreenPublished Jun 1, 2003

Take a bunch of reformed pop-core punks, dress them up in leather jackets and lock them in a basement jam space somewhere in downtown Toronto and this is what you get. Not the melodic speed punk of their former bands but a dynamic and blistering Who circa 1965 sound that draws on the hyper-kinetic energy of their past, fuses it with the trendy retro-vibe Stooges raunch of the present and delivers the rock sound of the future. But unlike so many bands exploiting the whole garage rock thing, these former members of Trigger Happy, Tirekickers and Blank Stare come by their sound naturally and with integrity. The result is a record that is both honest and dangerous.
