Vancouver synthpop songwriter Devours is kicking off 2025 by announcing a new album. Sports Car Era is due out March 14 through the artist's own label, surviving the game, and a video for the title track is out now.
Project mastermind Jeff Cancade told Exclaim! in a statement, "Sports Car Era is a nod to the male midlife crisis. I turned 40 a few months ago, and my life feels like a chaotic, unpredictable mess. The album grapples with aging, existential dread, and the struggle to stay afloat in Vancouver. On the flip side, it's about self-empowerment in adulthood, not giving a fuck about being commodifiable to anyone, forging my own path without music industry support, and recognizing that I might not have even reached my prime yet."
Get a taste of midlife ups and downs by checking out the video for "Sports Car Era" below. Its chaotic strobing reflects the song's harsh synth squall, the bursts of melody lend some sweetness to the fraught emotions.
Sports Car Era is available to pre-order digitally or on vinyl from Bandcamp. Look for Devours to tour in 2025, doing a series of mini-tours instead of one big trip.
Sports Car Era is the follow-up to 2023's Homecoming Queen. Devours also released the 2024 album Scorpion Deathlock through the ambient side-project the Golden Age of Wrestling.
