David St. Germain's debut album, My Country Song, starts out meta with a radio-friendly song about a radio-friendly song: the appropriately titled "Radio." From there, the optimistic pop-country vibe continues rolling along without interruption. In his pop ambitions, St. Germain doesn't shy away from cheese. The title track is about a fan girl who the singer wants to take home. About her, he writes, "she's a cat, not a cougar." Notably, "Country Song" was written for St. Germain by Keith Urban's guitarist, Brian Nutter. My Country Song also features a track written by Mike Reno of Loverboy ("Exactly What I Needed") and a Merle Haggard classic, "Working Man Blues." At best, St. Germain's first solo effort after years spent as a working musician hits the ears with pleasant enthusiasm. At worst, it's obvious that St. Germain is writing for the radio, as evidenced by his lazy chord progressions, production and rhymes, which we've heard a million times before.
