Silver Jews and Purple Mountains singer-songwriter David Berman died last week at the age of 52, and a medical examiner has now ruled that he died by suicide.
According to the New York Times, Berman was found dead in his apartment in the Brooklyn neighbourhood of Park Slope on August 7.
A spokesperson for Brooklyn's medical examiner said that Berman had hanged himself, and ruled it suicide.
Berman had been open about his struggles with drugs, alcohol and depression, and although he had a reputation for being reclusive, he had recently returned to the spotlight.
He retired from music in 2009, but released his first album under the moniker Purple Mountains just last month. He was slated to embark on a North American tour in support of the record over the weekend.
