Both Dave Grohl and Josh Homme have yet to follow up their respective 2017 albums with Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age, but new material could be closer than we think, according to ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons.
Speaking with eonmusic, Gibbons revealed he had been in the studio with Grohl and Homme at work on new material back in May.
"Just one month ago I was making a record with Queens of the Stone Age," Gibbons told the site. "Dave Grohl was also taking part and he decided to have a big barbecue. So there was this interesting gathering."
He continued: "We had gone to the desert to work on just a couple of tracks. Josh came out of the studio, and he had this box, and it was making some strange noise, and I said, 'Hey, what is that,' and he goes, 'I don't know, I just found it'; I said; 'Don't touch a thing; were going to use it for the song!' So that's how it started."
When asked if the sessions were for a follow-up to Queens of the Stone Age's Villains, Gibbons said it was, though many QOTSA fans have noted it's more likely the group were at work on a new instalment of Homme's Desert Sessions series.
Homme had hinted at recording a new Desert Sessions release on Instagram last month and brought it up again in conversation with Grohl last week on his Beats 1 radio show The Alligator Hour. Fans also pointed out that Homme's QOTSA bandmates Dean Fertita and Jon Theodore have tour commitments with the Raconteurs and Mini Mansions, respectively.
Gibbons noted the effort was set to be released before the end of 2019. "[Homme]'s completed it," he said. "I think that he said he wants to put it out Halloween. It'll be good."
The most recent instalment of Homme's Desert Sessions series arrived in 2003. Grohl released Concrete and Gold with Foo Fighters in 2017. ZZ Top's most recent album was 2012's La Futura.
