Crystal Castles' Alice Glass Tops <i>NME</i>'s "Cool List”

The bastion of hype known as NME always promises some hyperbolic praise, especially when it comes time for the annual "Cool List.” This year, however, their zeal was met with some good ol’ Canadian cynicism courtesy of Crystal Castles front-woman Alice Glass, who topped the list.

"I'm flattered, thank you, but back in school the people who held themselves in the same regard were also the biggest waste of skin I've ever met,” she told the magazine when asked about the title. Her reason for getting so many votes in the contest was even better: "My pact with Satan hasn't expired yet.”

Even the word "cool” came under attack in her brief interview, when she told them to "ask the mummified jazz musicians from the 1930s who started using it” about the word’s meaning, concluding that "we need new idioms, we need to stop talking like beatniks.” Ironically, these were some of the coolest things she could have said.
