Cornelius is one of Japan's most respected and innovative musicians. His latest album, Point (Matador), is a atmospheric, mood driven exercise in pop panache. He will be touring North America this spring.
Current fixations:
Work, using compact effectors and 9 volt batteries.
Mind-altering work of art:
Naohiro Ukawa, Modulation DVD
Most memorable or inspirational gig and why?
A Kamen Rider (like Power Rangers) show when I was a child. I was kidnapped by the monsters.
What has been your career high and low?
I don't really have either high or low times in my career.
What should everyone shut up about?
There are a lot of things. Working with this industry involves a lot of interviews (questions) and I think that doing these can sometimes be difficult.
I would drop everything to play a benefit for:
I could never drop everything.
What trait do you like and dislike most about yourself?
Yes.
What would make you kick someone out of your band and/or bed, and have you?
I'm mainly by myself (no band members), and I would never kick someone out of my bed!
When I think of Canada I think:
I went to Canada (Montreal) when I was a child. We stayed at Chateau Frontenac. I saw car accident and saw a person get hit by a car and getting tossed off. That's what I think, when I think of Canada.
What is your vital daily ritual?
I take a bath in the morning (and never at night).
How do you spoil yourself?
Sleeping in.
What was your most memorable day job?
Working at the art gallery and backing people off when they got too close to the paintings.
If I wasn't playing music I would be:
Yes.
What is your greatest fear?
Interviews.
If you had a superpower, what would it be?
Yes.
What makes you want to take it off and get it on?
Yes.
Music and sex: Is there a difference? Why?
Yes, I make music alone.
Strangest brush with celebrity:
I am not allowed to say.
Who would be your ideal dinner guest, living or dead, and what would you serve them?
No one specific. I like to eat alone.
What does your mom wish you were doing instead?
She loves me, so whatever I decided to do.
