A Shade of My Former Self certainly isn't the stuff of a night of debauchery, though it's equally disorienting — the group jump from the controlled chaos of Underøath to the syrupy choruses of Killswitch Engage and back again. The huge discrepancy between these sounds makes the album incredibly jarring. Sure, vocalist Caroline Westendorp jumps between the two with a deftness that belies her bandmates' inability to put together a cohesive song, but still sounds empty and formulaic. It's the opposite of the kind of night that might draw people to Amsterdam in the first place.
