CBC Radio's Inside the Music will air the story of singer Jackie Shane and the Toronto R&B scene of the mid-'60s this Sunday (February 28).
Shane, one of the most popular Toronto soul singers of his era, was openly gay and a cross-dresser. He played many gigs in the Yonge district, which, in the '60s, was the location of many of the city's R&B clubs.
The program, I Got Mine, is written, produced and narrated by Toronto's Elaine Banks, who previously did a radio show on the University of Toronto's CIUT called Pass the Dynamite.
I Got Mine features interviews with Shane's friends and band-mates and examines his influence on other musicians that followed him.
The program airs Sunday at 3 p.m. EST on CBC Radio 2 and 9 p.m. EST on CBC Radio 1. You can listen online here or via satellite here.
