Camera Obscura

To Change The Shape of an Envelope

BY Chris GramlichPublished Jun 1, 2000

Camera Obscura's debut CD is like a perfect blend of keyboard-oriented rock, punk aggression, droning riffs and dreamy atmospherics. To Change... is driven by swirling guitars, keyboard melodies, up-tempo rhythms and distorted vocals, but isn't afraid to quiet things down, focus on repetition and electronics, or be drawn into a swirling dirge that has no choice but to run its course. Tracks like "Trigger System," "Sound" and "Theory On Sex As An Art Form" show both the harsh, catchy and inventive sides of Camera Obscura. However, To Change The Shape... is an album that demands to be listened to as a whole, where the sum is greater than the individual parts. This would be a perfect album, if perfection was an attainable goal.
