There is a lot of resident musical talent in Yellowknife. Casey Koyczan, aka the Bushman, is one of those talents. He is a man with a mixer, a laptop, an electric guitar and an old telephone receiver. You read that right.

He experiments with sound by layering beats with guitar riffs and distorts his voice through a telephone receiver he uses as a microphone. The effect is intense, but the performance is generally more whimsical, because a lot of his songs are influenced by video games and he'll go into detail about that between songs.

The four songs he played were performed with precision, especially his last, "TMNT." (As in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.) It starts with a pulsating, thumping beat, and becomes more complex as the song progresses, with an infectious chord progression and guitar solos and vocals.

Koyczan ended up blasting his beats for some of the festival's first arrivals early Sunday afternoon. Not many people were around to move to his music. If he had been slotted a few hours later when more people were around to dance, the entire performance would have benefited.
