Perhaps in an attempt to take a break from all the weirdness of Holy Fuck, the bands founder Brian Borcherdt has announced hes branching out for a little solo excursion. On October 7, Hand Drawn Dracula will release Borcherdts Coyotes, a stripped-down solo effort that finds the Toronto-based songwriter getting back to basics, and the guitar.
Recorded by long-time friend Jose Contreras of By Divine Right, Coyotes was recently put to tape during one of Holy Fucks tour breaks in a living room turned recording space. The album contains little more than guitar and vocals, and as Borcherdt explains, it comes as a way to get back into his old "method of protest.
"I just wanted to write. That's all I want to do still, Borcherdt says in his one-sheet. "Now I have a band called Holy Fuck, which keeps me busy as hell. The only problem is that Holy Fuck doesn't have guitar in it, at all. So as you can imagine, I miss my guitar and writing sad songs.
"Last year, while taking a brief break from the road, a friend of mine recorded seven of my recently written songs. For the most part, we kept the first takes and did little else to them, leaving them bare with no drums, no bass, etc., just me and my guitar. It was nice."
In support of the record, Borcherdt has also announced he will be hitting the road and travelling across the country with fellow Canadian folkie Martha Wainwright. Here are Borcherdts tour dates, as well as the Coyotes tracklisting:
