DJ-Kicks

The latest instalment in the legendary DJ-Kicks series comes from German techno trio Brandt Brauer Frick. The group's live performances have gone as far as incorporating a full orchestra and have become a beacon of slick house and techno since their formation in 2008. Their DJ-Kicks, however, is a little more nonchalant than what's usually on offer. It's not necessarily rough around the edges, but it's certainly not as polished as their recordings, either. This lends a more human feel throughout the mix and proves that Brandt Brauer and Frick aren't just components in a German super computer that's built for techno.

Recorded in one day at Berlin's Watergate club, the vinyl-only mix features an eclectic blend of tracks, some of which are exclusive to this DJ-Kicks, from artists such as Dollkraut, Cosmic TRG, and Brandt Brauer Frick themselves. The set starts slow, with the likes of Jan Jelinek and Theo Parrish laying the foundation, which builds up to a more club-friendly vibe via French Fries, Philogresz and MMM, before winding right back down again with Thundercat and Dean Blunt. As with most DJ-Kicks comps, this one shows a different side to the group and is as much of an homage as it is a glimpse into the trio's future.
