Hailing from the swamplands of Louisiana, Boogie T opened the first night of Rifflandia (September 14) at Phillips Backyard. At the back end of Riff's vibrant Electric Avenue, Boogie T dropped into his set of laidback bass music to fans still streaming into the brewery lot. His music may be formulaic in some respects ― using EDM hallmarks like overusing done-to-death bass and predictable drops to pull in a distinctly younger electronic generation — but he was entirely effective in setting the tone and pace for the night.
"Eye of the Tiger" got chopped into an intro before being obliterated in a filthy deconstruction, and a surprising string arrangement that rolled into a screeching, grungy breakdown threw some weight behind the set. It may have been uninspiring, but Boogie T's high energy transferred to the ever-growing crowd and kept them moving.
