Every year, Canadian Music Week hosts dozens upon dozens of showcases designed both to shine a light on up-and-coming Canadian musical talent and honour veterans alike. This year's Bonsound showcase was no exception; in partnership with Sirius XM Radio and Exclaim!, the Montreal-based record label presented a stellar lineup at Toronto's The Great Hall on May 6.
Quebec City folk artist Safia Nolin started off the night on an emotional and powerful note, performing the heart-wrenching, acoustic-driven ballad "Acide" off last year's LP Limoilo. Montreal rock'n'roll duo Les Deuxluxes continued the set with a fiery performance of tell-all track "On the Road," which saw vocalist and guitar player Anna Frances Meyer thrashing in her glam-rock fringe outfit while Etienne Barry simultaneously played bass and percussion. Lisa LeBlanc, the New Brunswick-born musician known for her unique brand of folk, heightened the already built-up excitement with her banjo-heavy performance of "Du duvet dans les poches," a cut from her self-titled debut infected by a burning passion in LeBlanc's voice and a harmonious backing band. The showcase closed with a bang at 1 a.m. as hip-hop duo Radio Radio played their blunt track "Cause I'm a Hoe," in a commendable high-energy performance complete with dance routines from the Montreal-via-Nova Scotians.
